A residential addition and alteration to a 1920's house on an elevated site in Northcote Point in Auckland. We saw the introduction of the substantial basement garage as an uncharacteristic addition to the remnants of the existing character home, so the design response was to treat the addition as a contrasting but complementary plinth on which the existing house sits.
The original house had a contemporary top level added by another Architect in the past.
The interior of the home has been reconfigured to better relate to the site, outlook, and sunlight, and the introduction of a large open terrace located on top of the new garage plinth with free access to interior spaces, makes use of the northerly aspect and elevation.
The materials used in the addition relate to the historic characteristics of the existing home, and the crafted tactile nature of the cladding, integrated garage door, and continuity of the cladding onto the landscape walls will provide an interesting contemporary aesthetic, and street presence.
